History of our Pedigree Herd of Herefords

The Pedigree herd was started in 1965 with four horned cows and a bull Cherryburton Jollyman.  The main reason was to provide terminal sires for use on the suckler cow units.

To best utilise the natural resources on the Suckler cow units we decided to use Sim/Luing Cows and Hereford Bulls which enabled us to run a low cost extensive beef enterprise taking progeny right through to finish.

In 1978 the herd consisted of 20 cows and we made the decision to change to polled cattle by introducing some in-calf cows and heifers from the Craiglands and Kinellar Herds with a Lowesmoor bull.  Today the herd comprises of 45 cows and followers.

Margaret Cameron and CrannyOriginally the commercial herds extended to 600 Sim/Luing cows using home produced bulls.  In 2006 the commercial units were reduced, leaving us with one unit of 220 Sim/Luing cows, with all the finished Hereford sired cattle marketed through Dovecote Park/Waitrose Hereford Beef Scheme.  This reduction allows us to have more bulls available for sale.

In the early nineties embryos and live cattle were imported from Canada and in 2003 we imported embryos from Argentina.  Our current stock bulls are Dorepoll 1 499 Einsteine and Baldinnie 1 Orient.  Our aim is to keep improving the bulls and females by introducing new blood lines to ensure continuous progress in order to provide a satisfactory end product.

All the cattle in the Baldinnie Herd are recorded and scanned with Breed Plan and we are also members of the SAC Premium Cattle Health Scheme.  At present the Herd is BVD Vaccinated Accredited Free and Johnes Accredited. The herd is in a 4 year TB testing area with our last whole herd test in November 2013 which was clear.

The herd has won many major awards including the Supreme Championship at the Royal Highland Show, the Royal, the Scottish National and the National Poll Shows.  In 1997 we won the Scottish and the National Herd of the Year Competitions and have won the Poll Female of the year on four occasions.  One of our main highlights was winning the prestigious Royal Show Burke Trophy Championship when our home bred cow Baldinnie 1 Oakland 4th was one of the pair taking this award in 2002.
